Back-to-School Shouldn’t Mean Back to Hunger

Girl going back to school

I love this time of year. There’s something exciting about the start of a new school year—new teachers, new classrooms, new supplies, and a fresh start.

But at Backpack Society, we also know that back-to-school can be a really stressful time for families.

School supplies, new shoes, fees, activities, transportation—it all adds up. At the same time, families are still trying to keep up with rent, utilities, groceries, and everything else life throws at them. For families already stretching every dollar, there just isn’t always enough to cover it all.

And unfortunately, sometimes food is where families are forced to cut back.

As the school year begins, we see the need pick up quickly. Our schools reconnect with families, requests for weekend bags start coming in, school pantries need to be restocked, and families begin reaching out for additional grocery support.

For me, it’s always a reminder of why we do what we do~

Kids have enough to think about when they walk into school. Whether or not there will be food at home shouldn’t be one of those things.

We’re Growing This School Year!

One thing I’m especially excited about this year is that Backpack Society is expanding our support to Sheridan School District!

We’re starting by helping stock the district’s Resource Hub food pantry, which is located right inside one of their schools. Families can get the help they need in a place that’s close to home, familiar, and already connected to their school community.

It’s a great first step for us in Sheridan, and we’re excited to see where this partnership takes us. Of course are so happy to be continuing our partnerships in Douglas County, Littleton and Englewood School Districts.

Growing also means we need more food, more volunteers, more donations, and more community support. Thankfully, this community continues to show up.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this work. Backpack Society may be the organization getting the food out the door, but our community is what makes it possible.

As kids head back to school with backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, and supplies~

We’re working to make sure they have something just as important—consistent access to food.

Back-to-school should be about learning, friendships, opportunities, and all the possibilities that come with a new year.

It shouldn’t mean back to hunger.

Thank you for continuing to show up for Backpack Society and, most importantly, for the kids and families we serve. ❤️
